My dear Sir Reginald

I think your letter of December 12th mist
have been sent just before receiving my telegram
of the 10th telling you that I saw no objection
to your coming home early in the year on leave as
you propose, and extending your leave if you wish
on half pay up to the end of your time of office,
but that. I did not sae my my to changing my
previous decision about your suggested extension.
It is very satisfactory that the unofficial members
should show such keen appreciation of your good work
but I think that as a rule there is no advantage
in these extensions unless the circumstances are
very exceptional. I hope to find then a good
successor and I hope equally to find for you an
effective sphere of new work. It is, however, a
